Late Nirvana Frontman Kurt Cobain’s Iconic “MTV Unplugged” Sweater Sells for $334,000 US at Auction
It’s pretty amazing how badly people want Kurt Cobain’s “MTV Unplugged” sweater. At an auction held this past weekend, the sweater sold for $334,000. The sweater had been previously bought at auction, but the owner wanted to sell it.
story continued below…
Pro race team owner Garrett Kletjian first bought the sweater at auction for $137,500 in November 2015. The recent sale is a pretty great return on investment. He told Rolling Stone last week that the “responsibility” of owning the garment was possibly outstripping its bragging rights. Julien’s Auctions, the same Hollywood house that auctioned the sweater four years ago, was again responsible for the sale this time around.
“Sold for $334,000!” Julien’s Auctions shared Oct. 26. “A vintage cardigan sweater worn by Kurt Cobain during Nirvana’s MTV Unplugged performance in 1993. Sold in our ‘Icons & Idols: Rock ‘N’ Roll’ auction.”
The sweater was initially given to Cobain family nanny Jackie Farry by the singer’s widow, Hole‘s Courtney Love. Farry later needed money for her cancer treatments, she sold the sweater after she “got in touch with Courtney and [the musical pair’s daughter] Frances [Bean Cobain] to make sure they were cool with it,” which they were.
The Nirvana rocker’s iconic Unplugged sweater was included in the auction Oct. 25 and 26 at New York’s Hard Rock Cafe. The auction also included items from musicians such as Bob Dylan, Elvis Presley, Eric Clapton and more. Also up for bid was one of Cobain’s custom Fender guitars.
Fan Who Guns N’ Roses Banned for Life From Their Future Shows Gives First Interview
Rick Dunsford whose a huge Guns N’ Roses fan whose named his son Axl, seen them 32 times and had their signatures tattooed on his body gave his first interview since being booted from a show in Wichita, Kansas this week. He was allegedly banned for buying unreleased Guns N’ Roses songs from a storage locker that was up for sale and these songs have made their way online. You can hear the interview here.
Dunsford said the following in the interview.
“I’ve got a lot of friends that go to various shows. When they were playing in Charlotte for the tour kickoff [Sept. 25], I got word that they were looking for me. They were asking everybody in the crowd, ‘Where’s Rick?’ And they had pictures of me too,”
“I reached out to them the day after that show and told them I’m coming to some shows — I’ve got tickets to multiple shows — and I wanna make sure that I’m not gonna be thrown out, because it’s a pretty far travel for me to go to this,” he continued. “They didn’t tell me not to come or anything, so I just went out there [to Wichita].”
Dunsford said while he was waiting in line for the Wichita show, he received an email from GN’R’s legal representative telling him he’s not welcome at the band’s performances. The reason? They blame him for a massive leak of unreleased GN’R material.
“About two and a half months ago, I drove to Virginia, and there was a storage locker that belonged to Tom Zutaut [former GN’R A&R Rep],” Dunsford recalled. “He didn’t pay his bills or something and it was auctioned off. The individual that bought the locker, there was about 20 CDs in this locker of unreleased Guns N’ Roses music from around ’99 to 2000 or 2001.” He and a few other fans scraped up $15,000 to purchase the music from the guy who now owned the locker.
The band’s camp reached out to Dunsford asking for the material back, an agreement was made and they gave him his money back, however they later voided the agreement. “I know the seller that I bought them from was continuing to sell to other individuals, and there was a massive leak. So pretty much, I’ve been blamed for this,” he said.
“[The ban] is pretty much for the rest of my life, is what the head of security in that video was telling me,” he concluded. “They made it clear that if I am spotted at all, I will be arrested on the spot…I was supposed to go see them this Sunday
